Congratulations – you are pregnant! This is an exciting time in your life, but you may also be feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Whether this is your first pregnancy or you have been pregnant before, your first trimester can be especially challenging. At Select Health Chiropractic, we see women throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey and the first trimester can be a doozy for most of our clients. Here are a few common complaints we hear from our pregnant moms, and some ideas on how to feel a bit better.

Nausea

The first trimester brings about an influx of hormones that your body cannot keep up with. Thanks to this rush of hormones, you can begin to feel nauseous. While some moms experience “morning sickness”, we have worked with moms who are sick in the evenings, in the afternoons, or all day long. Some moms find themselves vomiting, while others just feel ill or lose their appetites. In any case, nausea can make normal daily life difficult.

If you are experiencing nausea, talk to your doctor (and chiropractor) about it. If you are significantly ill, and unable to keep fluids down, you may be experiencing hyperemesis and require further medical treatment. If you are not sick all day long, try saving your main meals to the hours when you feel well, sticking with water, crackers, and anything that sounds good while you feel nauseous. Finally, smelling peppermint can take the edge off when you feel nauseous; try keeping a small vial of peppermint oil in your desk at work for when you are feeling ill.

Exhaustion

There is nothing quite like the exhaustion you can feel when you are newly pregnant. (The only thing that comes close is the exhaustion in your 3rd trimester!) If you are feeling especially fatigued or exhausted during these twelve weeks, take it easy on yourself. Sneak in a nap when possible and head to bed early. Your body is working hard to grow a baby; give it the rest it needs!

Aches and Pains

While some moms experience the aches and pains of pregnancy during the third trimester, many moms can begin to feel discomfort during the first trimester as well. As your body changes to make way for Baby, you can feel all sorts of body sensations that are uncomfortable.
